Karl Lee executes every aspect of production from obtaining gemstones in their rough form
to designing cuts for the gems, shaping the metal, hammering, filing, setting and polishing each piece.
Karl Lee moved to Big Sur, California in the 1960s, where his work as an artist in ceramics, metal-smithing and painting flourished.
Karl's approach to the design and fabrication of each piece has always been inspired by the greatest artist: nature. His painter's eye sees gems as art forms; his respect and admiration of nature fuse with his foundation in ancient philosophy creating an art that integrates the beauty of nature with the body.
Karl's wearable art has a signature look that is "simply elegant". This can be seen in his earliest work to the most recent, making each piece highly collectable.
Unlike todays's designer smiths, Karl Lee executes every aspect of production from obtaining gemstones in their rough form from the earth to designing cuts for the gems, shaping the metal, hammering and filing to setting and polishing each piece.
Karl's craftsmanship is as unique as his intimate relationship with miners, adding to the recognition of his work with cabochons of quality that are difficult to obtain. His art reflecting his sensitivity as a designer and studio smith captures the true nature of the desired gem with clean , austere designs executed in an essential way without losing the impact of the stone.
Pure color and pure form are a joy to the soul. To harmonize design, form and function is a philosophical ethic that gives Karl inspiration.
My family's old world ethics and tradition echo in my soul every time I design and fabricate a piece. I am an American artist with old world values and proud to sign my pieces with "handmade, USA and Karl Lee Big Sur"
